Social Studies Grade 5 Unit 03: Celebrate Freedom Week 2012-2013

Following is a question from one 2012-2013 CSCOPE 5th grade Social Studies Assessment. The 20 Texas Education Service Centers are responsible for all  CSCOPE instruction materials and Assessments. These 20 ESCs are still selling Assessments to the Texas School Districts under a new name. The CSCOPE name has been changed to TEKS Resource Curriculum System.

Changing the name of a product doesn’t necessarily mean that the quality of the product has changed.

Read the 1st amendment of the Bill of Rights below, then read the CSCOPE assessment that shows how distorted the 20 Texas Education Service Centers represented this amendment. The ESCs taught your 5th grade students last year that the 1st amendment of the Bill of Rights gives adults the right to belong to any club.

What other distorted views of the Bill of Rights did the 20 ESCs, the groups being given millions and millions of your TAX dollars each year , teach to your children in 5th and other grades? What is in this years CSCOPE TEKS Resource Curriculum System Assessments? Has there even been a change in the assessments?

Bill of Rights 1st amendment
 Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,
or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;
or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press;
or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Your neighbor is an adult. He wants to join a club that a lot of the other neighbors
don’t like. He has the right to take part in the club because the First Amendment in
the Bill of Rights gives him_________________.
F the right to worship
G the right to assemble   This is an incorrect answer. There is no correct answer.
H the right of freedom of the press
J right to petition the government
